How to find your face shape (men)

The face shape detector opens with men's haircut, beard and glasses ideas switched on. Your photo stays on your phone.

You can find your face shape three ways:

  1. Photo. Take a straight-on picture at eye level from arm’s length or further, hair pushed back. Close-up selfies make the middle of the face look wider (research on the “selfie effect”), so distance matters.
  2. Tape measure. Measure the four distances below and compare them.
  3. Mirror check. Look for your widest point and the shape of your jaw.

If you have a beard, your jaw and chin are harder to see. Measure the jaw by feel, or use a photo from before you grew it.

The same seven outlines are drawn side by side in the face shapes guide, which also explains how to tell look-alike pairs apart.

Men’s face shape measurements

Measurement Where to measure
Forehead Across the widest part of the forehead, roughly halfway between brows and hairline
Cheekbones Across the face from the outer point of one cheekbone to the other, below the outer eye corners
Jaw Straight across from one jaw corner to the other, below the earlobes
Face length From the middle of the hairline to the bottom of the chin

If your hairline has receded, measure from where your hairline used to be, or from the top of your forehead where the brow ridge flattens out. The detector lets you drag the hairline marker to the right place.

Face shape chart for men

Chart of the same man drawn with seven face shapes, labeled oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong and triangle.
The seven face shapes. Check yours before you pick a cut or beard.
  • Oval: longer than wide, widest at the cheekbones, rounded jaw. See oval.
  • Round: about as wide as long, soft jaw. See round.
  • Square: similar widths top to bottom, angular jaw corners. See square.
  • Oblong (rectangle): clearly longer than wide, straight sides. See oblong.
  • Heart: wide forehead, narrow jaw and chin. See heart.
  • Diamond: wide cheekbones, narrow forehead and jaw. See diamond.
  • Triangle: jaw wider than forehead. See triangle.

Haircuts by face shape

Six men drawn with the haircut that suits their face shape, labeled: round with a quiff, square with a crew cut, oblong with a side part, heart with a textured fringe, diamond with fuller sides, and triangle with a textured quiff.
One cut from the table for each shape, drawn on that face shape.
Face shape Haircuts that suit it Watch out for
Oval Almost anything: crew cut, side part, quiff, slick back, textured crop Very tall styles if your face is at the longer end
Round Quiff, pompadour, textured crop with height; short sides Round buzz cuts and heavy fringes that add width
Square Crew cut, buzz, side part, short textured crop Very boxy flat tops
Oblong Side-swept fringe, classic side part, fuller sides Tall quiffs and very short sides
Heart Medium length with a textured fringe or side part Very short sides, lots of height
Diamond Fuller sides, textured fringe, swept-back medium styles Skin fades that exaggerate the cheekbones (unless you want that)
Triangle Volume on top and at the temples, textured quiff Flat tops with very short sides

Hair type matters as much as face shape: curly and coily hair adds natural width, which helps oblong and diamond faces, and a tapered cut with shape on top suits round faces.

Beards by face shape

The same man drawn with three face shapes and a beard that suits each, labeled: round, with a beard that is longer at the chin; oblong, with a beard that is fuller at the sides; and heart, with a beard that is fuller along the jaw.
How a beard changes the outline of the face.
Four men drawn with a beard that suits their face shape, labeled: oval with a short boxed beard, square with a short even beard, diamond with a beard fuller at the chin and jaw, and triangle with a beard fuller at the chin.
Beards for oval, square, diamond and triangle faces.
Face shape Beard styles to try Why
Oval Stubble, short boxed beard, full beard Balanced already, so choose by style
Round Shorter sides, longer at the chin; goatee; anchor Adds length
Square Short and even, or slightly longer at the chin Keeps the jaw defined, or softens its corners
Oblong Fuller sides, shorter chin; mutton chops Adds width, avoids length
Heart Full beard, extended goatee Fills out the narrow chin and jaw
Diamond Fuller at the chin and jaw; chin strap Balances wide cheekbones
Triangle Short on the jaw, fuller at the chin; light stubble Keeps a wide jaw from looking wider

A tidy neckline makes more difference than almost anything else: trim to about a finger’s width above the Adam’s apple and keep the cheek line clean.

How facial hair changes your apparent face shape

A beard doesn’t change your bones, but it changes the outline other people see:

  • Length at the chin makes the face look longer and the jaw narrower.
  • Fullness at the sides makes the face look wider and the jaw stronger.
  • A sharp, trimmed jawline adds definition to a soft jaw.
  • Stubble keeps the natural shape while adding texture.

Because beards change the outline this way, many men with round or soft jaws use them to create a more angular look, and men with long faces often keep the chin short.

Glasses by face shape (men)

Four men wearing frames that suit their face shape, labeled: round face with rectangular frames, square face with round frames, oblong face with deep aviators, and triangle face with browline frames.
Frames that balance four face shapes.
  • Round faces: rectangular or browline frames add structure.
  • Square faces: round or oval frames soften strong angles; square frames look bold.
  • Oblong faces: deeper frames with some height, like square or aviator styles.
  • Heart and diamond faces: aviators, rimless or bottom-heavy frames.
  • Triangle faces: browline frames with a strong top rim.
  • Oval faces: most frames, about as wide as the face.

Myths about men’s face shapes

  • “A square jaw is the only good face shape.” Every face shape suits men; style choices do the rest.
  • “Face shape apps can’t be trusted.” They’re reliable with a good photo, as long as the hairline and beard are accounted for.
  • “You need a full beard to change your look.” Even a trimmed beard shape changes the outline.
  • “Face shape doesn’t matter for men’s haircuts.” It’s one of the main things good barbers consider, along with hair type.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my face shape as a man?

Take a straight-on photo at arm's length with your hair pushed back, or measure with a tape: forehead, cheekbones, jaw corner to corner, and hairline to chin. Compare length with width, then compare the three widths. The face shape detector does this from a photo; switch it to Men for haircut and beard ideas.

Can AI tell my face shape?

Face-mapping software can measure your proportions reliably from a clear, straight-on photo, and this detector explains what it measured. It can't see your hairline, so you drag a marker to it. A beard can also hide the jaw, so measure clean-shaven or check your jaw by hand.

Which haircut suits my face shape?

Round and square faces suit height on top with shorter sides. Oblong faces suit less height and fuller sides or a fringe. Heart and diamond faces suit fuller sides and a textured fringe. Oval and triangle faces suit most cuts, with volume on top helping a triangle face.

What beard suits my face shape?

Round faces: shorter sides, longer chin. Oblong faces: fuller sides, shorter chin. Square faces: short and even, or slightly longer at the chin. Heart and diamond faces: fuller at the chin and jaw. Triangle faces: shorter on the jaw, fuller at the chin. Oval faces: almost any beard.

Does a beard change your face shape?

A beard doesn't change your bone structure, but it changes the outline people see. A beard that's longer at the chin makes a face look longer; one that's fuller at the sides makes it look wider. That's why beards are such a useful styling tool.

What is the best face shape for a guy?

There isn't one. Every face shape is common among men widely considered attractive, and preferences vary between people and cultures. The useful question is which haircut and beard suit the shape you have.
